Thoughts on the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997
by Peter G. Masullo, CPA

Uncle Sam has done it again.
Got himself in a great big jam.
I ain’t talking about the one with the Iraqi madman.
I’m talking about his ill conceived, political, tax plan.

I cannot deny that Congress threw us a few bones.
Especially for those of us selling our homes.
And all you investment salesmen with your cellular phones,
Got some of the biggest breaks, so please, leave me alone.

We’ll now have a kinder IRS I am told.
After all, there were political promises to uphold.
So many taxpayers with deductions too bold,
Have just fallen into a pot of gold.

But the new law is complex in every way.
You have to plan your transactions to the very day.
And now the unwary will have a price to pay
Unless they can afford a good CPA.

Despite all the talk of simplicity that you hear
The revenue code grows by volumes year by year.
I also perceive some inequities here.
But our legacy to our children is my greatest fear.

Aside from the environment which we have pillaged and raped,
And the Social Security System’s dire state,
The politicians choose to wait
And take no action until it’s too late.

In a few short years when the system goes bust
Because there are not enough jobs to fuel Corporate America’s lust
Our rivers and reservoirs will become laden with rust
As future taxpayers’ dreams turn into dust.
